Funny, I was just discussing the subject of ODD and how I thought it was just a way to discredit anyone critical of the establishment with my 11 year old this afternoon and right away she remarked on the acronym, ODD. It seems to reinforce the stereotype of “conspiracy theorists” or anyone who challenges the status quo as being odd. I know of one boy who was diagnosed with this illness and his mother is extremely abusive to the point where he tried to take his own life at age 12! No wonder he was defiant toward authority figures! In this fucked up world, the definition of mentally ill is NOT to resist!

Well, we’ve long known that psychiatric categories overlap significantly with political categories, and that much “mental illness” is really just inchoate, relatively ineffectual political resistance. As I used to say to my students, if you show up on the steps of the main university administration building with an assault rifle and call for revolution, whether they put you in prison, or in a mental hospital, will depend heavily on how many followers you have. And we won’t even talk about ADHD, which I strongly suspect is just a cheap way to overlook how boring and stupid most public school curricula and teaching are.

Psychiatry is as phony as a three dollar bill as even some Psychiatrists themselves have admitted who were honest enough, and has nothing to do with real Science. This is simply not true. People don’t get institutionalized for ODD. Conduct Disorder, yes. I suppose a kid could be hospitalized for ODD… but that’s because the kid’s parents want it, not the mental health community.

I’ve never seen an adult institutionalized by the state for simply being ODD- or anything else. Diagnoses are not enough to justify hospitalization. Behavior, combined with diagnosis, may be. In other words… you have to break a law for the state to hospitalize you, in most cases. Other than that, you have to be an imminent danger to self or others, or unable to take care of yourself… and that’s very hard to get for more than three days.

Brian, you did not do your homework. You read diagnostic criteria out of context, and you clearly don’t have the training to understand how it’s actually used. It’s fearmongering. There are so many truly sick people needing help who can’t get it because there aren’t enough beds. The mental health hospitals- public or private- don’t need to invent reasons to get people into them.

I work in an alternative high school and witness students with moderate to severe cases of ODD daily. To my knowledge, none of them are medicated for this, and certainly none of them are or have been institutionalized. The author of the post is right in that we should be concerned about people being abused or mistreated through this declaration, but until instances of it begin happening, there is no need to accuse our government of being a fascist, Orwellian institution hell-bent on controlling the populace.

This isn’t a “new” disorder at all, it’s been around for quite a while, and the DSM-IV-TR is from 1994 or 1995 IIRC. (They are working on DSM V right now, but it is not yet finished.)

It’s my understanding that ODD is more of an impulsive thing rather than intelligent people questioning authority figures/institutions, like a recurring negative to everything said.

For example, in the case of two adults:

Non-ODD: “I think we’re low on gas”
ODD: “No, we aren’t.”
Non-ODD: “Are you kidding? it’s almost on E!”
ODD: “No, not all the way”
Non-ODD: “Well there’s a gas station right here, I’ll just stop, it’ll be quick”
ODD: “No need to, let’s just go”

All medical branches are now controlled by Government health care. For those people to be able to do and keep their jobs, they will have to do exactly what the Government asks them to either do for or against the patient. The Government is now their boss, and just like any other job an employee has to do what the boss order’s to be done.

“If the psychiatrists use the ODD illness on regular adults then I am sure many disgruntled tax paying Americans and those that no longer consent to be governed would be forcefully medicated” NOT TRUE. ODD is a childhood disorder and DOES NOT apply to people who are 18 and over. After reading the full entry in the DSM, I don’t think it applies in the way the article makes it sound. The DSM is by nature a complicated and controversial thing, because labelling any illness or making any change automatically affects a number of people. The DSM entry refers to children (it must be diagnosed before middle school) who consistently question authority for no apparent reason — it definitely doesn’t apply to those kids who stand up for their rights when they are being bullied, even by teachers. I’ve met and gone to school with kids who would fit this description, where they are immediately confrontational with any sort of authority figure, seemingly for no reason. This behavior might be taught at home, but more likely than not it is a personality trait… for example, my brother has more of these tendencies than the rest of the family even though he was raised in the same way as us. This doesn’t mean they’re going to “lock up” these kids or put them on meds, it’s just a validation of those who struggle or whose children struggle with the issues mentioned here. It might open up funding for these families to get therapy for children who otherwise would not have had a covered illness according to insurance. A long rant (there’s probably something in the DSM about that!) taking another viewpoint on the matter

Ok, I get this. ODD along with ADD, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorders have been over diagnosed by “health care professionals” who have jumped on board with the “fad disorders”. However, as a mental health provider and someone who diagnoses mental illness this article is over zealous and just plan trying to stir the pot. Oppositional Defiant Disorder does exist. However, diagnosing it along with any mental illness needs to be done carefully and with conservative criticism. The hypothetical statement “a student gives out 9/11 truth fliers and a teacher says [You don’t have a Constitutional right to give out fliers good buddy] then non compliance is considered hostile or disobedient. ” is plan ridiculous. This does NOT meet the criteria for ODD. Nor did I see anywhere in the DSM excerpt the term “free thinkers, Oath keepers”, or the like mentioned. Also, ODD is a childhood and adolescent disorder. ODD is NOT an adult diagnosis. This diagnosis is intended to address children and adolescence with extreme emotional and behavioral disturbances. For example, a child who cannot refrain oneself from hurting themselves or others, unable or unresponsive to typical disciplinary actions (time outs, taking a way an important belonging, etc.), abuses animals, repeated property destruction, and who does not exhibit a sense of remorse for their actions/behavior, would likely have ODD. Oppositional Defiant Disorder can be a precursor for more serious personality disorders in adulthood, this primarily being Antisocial Personality Disorder. This disorder makes up a huge proportion of individuals who are repeat offenders of criminal and dangerous activities. The most concerning of which is complete lack of empathy for others and devoid of remorse for their behavior.

This article is trying to get people up in arms over the mental health profession. It’s completely over the top and the words of an extremist. Come on people! Do the research and decide for yourself. This article is not credible.

My psychiatrist, a theological dominionist, sexist, anti-Semite, racist and homophobe, supported my supposedly-atheist “mother” and until February of 2011, I was pretty much housebound…forbidden to learn to drive, forbidden to seek employment, forbidden to go to school on-campus, forbidden from going to church, forbidden from using the computer and telephone, called an “emotional retard”, called “stupid” and “slow”, almost starved, paraded around my “mother”‘s coworkers as the poster child for Thorazine, thrown into mental hospitals for standing up for my personal beliefs, threatened to be put into a special home for adults with Down syndrome and mental retardation, threatened to be sent to a convent school, slapped, held down, cursed out…my “father” went along with the abuse, hit me, spit in my face, threw things at me…for a long time I was very physically ill, with stomach problems and two teeth rotting out, but I was “paranoid” about my teeth, just imagining that they were rotting…and my chronic nausea and frequent vomiting were “symptoms of mental instability” and I just “needed my meds checked”…Now a few days ago, I found out that post traumatic stress disorder caused by childhood abuse is frequently misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder…I hate my biological parents and my old shrink…thank you for posting this, I will forward the article to my “parents” so that they can know how much they have hurt me.
